Heat pump installation questions
How long does a heat pump installation take?
Most straightforward replacements are completed in a single day. A first-time installation in a home with no existing ductwork, or a changeover that needs electrical work, can run into a second day. We tell you which yours is before we start, not on the day.
Do heat pumps actually work in Ontario winters?
Yes. The cold-climate systems we install keep producing heat down to roughly minus 30 degrees Celsius, which covers almost every night Southern Ontario sees. Older heat pumps earned a poor reputation in Canada; cold-climate inverter models are a different generation of equipment.
Ducted or ductless, which does my home need?
If you already have ductwork in good condition, a ducted system is usually the simpler and cheaper route. Ductless mini-splits suit homes with no ducts, additions, finished basements and rooms that are always too hot or too cold. We look at the house before recommending either.
Can a heat pump replace my furnace completely?
In many Ontario homes, yes. In others we recommend a dual-fuel setup, where the heat pump handles most of the season and the existing furnace covers the coldest nights. That decision comes from your home heat loss and your current heating source, not from a preference.
Do I have to replace my air conditioner at the same time?
No, but it is often the sensible moment. A heat pump does the cooling an air conditioner does, so if your air conditioner is near the end of its life, replacing both with one system avoids paying twice.
What size heat pump does my home need?
Sizing comes from a heat loss calculation, not from square footage alone. An oversized system short-cycles and wears out early; an undersized one struggles in February. This is the step that decides whether you are happy with the system in five years.
Replacing an oil furnace? That is a different job from a standard installation, and it qualifies for a larger rebate. See oil to heat pump conversion<\/a>.<\/p>
