Best Furnace Brands in Canada for 2027: Lennox vs Carrier vs Goodman vs Midea

Key Takeaways

Most “best furnace brand” lists rank brands by opinion. This one tells you what to compare and why, because in a cold Ontario winter the brand on the cabinet matters less than people expect.

  • There is no single best furnace brand. Lennox, Carrier and Goodman all sell condensing gas furnaces that clear Canada’s legal efficiency floor of 95% AFUE.
  • The real differences are in the tier you buy, not the logo: single-stage or two-stage heat, a variable-speed blower, and how the warranty is structured.
  • Warranties are not the same on paper. Carrier’s Canadian page, for example, offers either 10 years of parts only or 5 years of parts plus 3 years of labour, and only with timely registration.
  • Midea sits in two decisions. It publishes a gas furnace series, and it is also a cold-climate heat pump brand, so the right comparison depends on which system you are replacing.
  • Installation quality moves the result more than brand does. A correctly sized, correctly vented furnace from any of these brands beats a badly installed one from the “best” brand.

How We Judge a “Best” Furnace Brand

“Best” only means something once you say best at what. For an Ontario home, we compare furnace brands on five things you can check yourself:

  1. Efficiency range. How high the brand’s condensing models go, and what the legal minimum already gives you.
  2. Comfort tier. Single-stage, two-stage or variable-capacity heat, and a variable-speed blower.
  3. Warranty structure. Parts, labour, heat exchanger, and what you must do to keep the coverage.
  4. Parts and service access. Whether a local technician can get a part and fix the unit in the week it fails.
  5. How much the installer matters. Sizing, venting and commissioning decide whether any brand performs as rated.

We install and service Lennox, Carrier, Goodman and Midea equipment, plus other brands, so we have no reason to push one name. The comparison below is about the criteria, not about a favourite.

This page was checked on 31 October 2026. Manufacturers revise their lineups and warranty terms, so confirm the current model sheet before you sign anything.

What Every Furnace on the Market Already Gives You

Before comparing brands, know what you get regardless of the badge.

The legal efficiency floor is already high

Natural Resources Canada sets a minimum of 95% AFUE for most new gas furnaces sold in Canada. That means a new condensing furnace from any of these brands already turns about 95 cents of every gas dollar into heat.

The jump between brands is small at the top

Carrier’s Canadian page lists its Infinity line at up to 98.5%, its Performance line at up to 97% and its Comfort line at up to 97%. Going from 95% to 97% saves a modest amount of gas on a typical home.

The efficiency gap between brands is smaller than the gap between tiers inside one brand.

What really changes between tiers

  • Single-stage: the burner is either on or off.
  • Two-stage: a low setting handles most winter days, so it runs longer and evens out temperature.
  • Variable-speed blower: it moves air slowly and steadily, which usually means quieter operation and fewer hot and cold spots.

Choose the tier first. Then choose the brand.

Lennox vs Carrier vs Goodman vs Midea: What Actually Differs

Carrier

Carrier sells three gas furnace series in Canada: Infinity, Performance and Comfort. Their published top ratings run from up to 97% (Comfort) to up to 98.5% (Infinity).

On the Canadian page, Carrier states that on eligible equipment, upon timely registration, you select either a 10-year parts-only limited warranty or a 5-year parts warranty that includes 3 years of labour. The page does not state a registration deadline, so ask your installer for it in writing.

Lennox

Lennox sells its furnaces in three collections: Merit, Elite and the Dave Lennox Signature Collection. Merit is the entry collection, Elite the middle, Signature the top.

Lennox states that the right warranty depends on the collection and the model, and that registration is part of keeping it. Ask for the Canadian warranty certificate for the exact model you are quoted, not a general brochure.

Goodman

Goodman’s range includes both 80% and 90%+ AFUE furnaces. Its published model sheets list two-stage, variable-speed models in the 96% range.

Because Goodman’s public pages do not state a warranty without a model number, treat the model sheet and the written Canadian certificate as the only valid source.

Midea

Midea’s own specification sheet describes a 96% AFUE, two-stage gas furnace series with multi-position installation, rated for natural gas and propane. That sheet is for Midea’s US lineup, so ask for the Canadian model sheet for the exact unit you are quoted.

How the four compare

What you compare Carrier Lennox Goodman Midea
Series Infinity, Performance, Comfort Signature, Elite, Merit Multiple, from 80% to 90%+ AFUE Gas furnace series plus EVOX G3 heat pumps
Top efficiency stated by the maker Up to 98.5% Confirm per model Confirm per model 96% on its published furnace sheet
Warranty 10 yr parts, or 5 yr parts + 3 yr labour, on timely registration Varies by collection; registration matters Varies by model; get it in writing Get the Canadian certificate in writing
Best question to ask “Which series, and when must I register?” “Which collection, and what is the Canadian certificate?” “Which model number, and what does the certificate say?” “Which Canadian model, and what does the certificate say?”

A table like this cannot tell you who wins, and that is the point. The honest answer to “which is best” is “which model, installed by whom, with which written warranty”.

Midea: When It Is a Furnace Choice and When It Is a Heat Pump Choice

Midea shows up in two different decisions, and mixing them up is how people end up comparing the wrong things.

If you are replacing a gas furnace with a gas furnace

Midea’s furnace series sits in the same comparison as Lennox, Carrier and Goodman. Judge it on the same five criteria above, starting with the model number and the written Canadian warranty.

If you are replacing the furnace with a heat pump

That is a different system, not a different brand of the same thing. Midea’s EVOX G3 line is a cold-climate heat pump range that Midea rates for heating down to -30 °C, and many Ontario homes keep a backup heat source alongside a heat pump anyway.

When a heat pump is worth considering

  • Your furnace is near the end of its life, and you are also replacing an old air conditioner.
  • You want one system for heating and cooling.
  • You want to compare running costs against gas for your own home.

Five Questions That Matter More Than the Brand

Ask every contractor these. The answers separate a good quote from a vague one.

  1. What size furnace, and how did you calculate it? A heat loss calculation, not the size of the old unit.
  2. Which exact model number and tier? “A Lennox” is not a quote.
  3. How is it vented, and does the quote include condensate and venting work?
  4. What does the written warranty say, and who registers it?
  5. What is excluded? Permits, gas line work and drywall are the usual surprises.

Why the installer matters as much as the badge

A furnace that is too large cycles on and off and wears out sooner. One that is too small cannot hold temperature in January. Neither is a brand problem.

The installation is part of the product. You are buying a result, not a cabinet. If an older unit is already acting up, furnace repair can tell you whether it is worth keeping another winter.

Furnace Brand FAQ

Which furnace brand lasts the longest?

Furnaces from all three brands commonly last 15 to 20 years when installed and maintained properly. Annual furnace maintenance and correct sizing affect lifespan more than the name.

Is a more expensive brand worth it?

Sometimes. A higher tier with a variable-speed blower can be worth it for comfort and noise. The price jump between brands is usually smaller than the jump between tiers.

Do I need to register the warranty?

Often yes. Carrier’s page makes coverage depend on timely registration, and other manufacturers have registration rules too. Ask your installer who registers it and when.

Can I mix brands, such as a Lennox furnace with a Carrier air conditioner?

Usually it is better to match the furnace and air conditioner coil and controls so the system is rated and warrantied together. Ask for the combination in writing.

Does 1st Heat Home Comfort install all of these brands?

We install and service Lennox, Carrier, Goodman and Midea equipment, and other brands as well.

Choosing Your Furnace for the 2027 Heating Season

Plan ahead rather than waiting for a failure in January. Booking a replacement in spring or fall usually costs less than an emergency in February, and you have time to compare quotes.

Pick the tier you want, insist on model numbers and a written warranty, and judge the installer as carefully as the brand.
